Kalemkiarian Bogos

was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1951 of Coptic Egyptian and Armenian descent. He spent his childhood in Egypt and immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1962. Rather than pursue an academic career, Bogos decided to travel to different parts of the world to seek knowledge and experience in life and art. To that end he has traveled extensively over the years. He lived in India for two years and studied Tibetan Buddhist Tonka (miniature) painting; he has also traveled through the Andes in South America, Afghanistan, Europe and Indonesia where he studied Batik textile printing techniques.

Bogos decided upon a career in the arts at the age of 24. Being somewhat of a rebel he decided not to study art at the academy but at the studio. He is an autodidact and pursues the study of art independently. He fiercely maintains his independence refusing to bow to artistic trends and fashions. He has spent years working in sweatshops and factories to make a living while pursuing his art. He still works as an industrial engraver and model maker in Applied Arts.

Despite being somewhat of an outsider, Bogos has, nevertheless, managed to stage a few exhibitions over the years in commercial and not for profit galleries. Through the auspices of a well- known curator and collector, some of Bogos’ art has been archived at the Art Gallery of Ontario. He has also been a founding member of the Outsider Artists Collective and he has served as the chair of the Submissions Committee at A Space, the first government funded non-profit parallel gallery for artists in Canada.

Bogos has published an illustrated art book called “The Heart of Progress, an illustrated guide” Black Crow Books, 1997 Toronto. He is currently working on another book project.
